for over the past 500 years, oxford has celebrated may 1st, or may morning,
by gathering at the bottom of magdalen tower while a choir begins singing at 6am.
in the last few decades, it's gotten more rowdy with kids jumping off magdalen bridge into really shallow water. this morning, the police barricaded the area around magdalen bridge so that there wouldn't be too many people and that it would be safer.
this guy broke through the lines
listening to the choir sing
happy may!
What a great tradition! That looks like such a fun way to welcome May :)
ReplyDeleteMayday!
ReplyDeleteI like the picture of the crowd. Looks very cool.
Have a great little Saturday!
how lovely.
ReplyDeleteI studied in Oxford four years ago and the Mayday celebration is still one of my most poignant memories. It's so hard to explain how touching it is!
