like a fairy tale
salzburg

I wrote about these (and other) fairy tale lands* over at Kelly Ann's yesterday! What I wouldn't give to jet off to Europe this weekend...

*As mystically beautiful as these two cities are, they are, indeed, real. San Marino and Salzburg, to be exact.

phở

pho

There's a place we always go. I can never remember its name (Phở Saigon? I had to look that up) and it isn't fancy in the slightest. There are computer-printed signs all over saying, "PAY AT REGISTER" and we always joke at the end of the meal asking, "Where do we pay, again?"

I almost always order the same thing. #22, regular, with small egg noodles. I wipe my chopsticks and soup spoon with a napkin, like my mother taught me. Then I pile in the bean sprouts, adding bits of red pepper sauce in four dabs in the bowl. I give you all of my squid. You get the larger bowl, add more spice, a squeeze of lime, and by mid-meal your face is flushed and rosy.

And then we sit and talk. We used to forget to ask for water with our tea, but not anymore. Once, we stayed so long the waiters thought we couldn't read the signs around the restaurant and brought the bill to us.

This is where we go when we don't know where to go. After afternoons together. Just the two of us.

On Sunday we celebrated my beautiful mother's birthday at the restaurant where the owner never forgets my mom's order. Our family time was filled with (too much) sushi, sporadic walks to entertain the kids, and cake with the creaminess of tiramisu.

Mama is so special to all of us; I can't think of a better way to celebrate her life than to surround her with all the people she helped give life to.

airbnb office space

After closing in on my second week at work, I can honestly say our office is like a new home. Sure, I'm still learning everyone's names and I don't know where everything is, but the little things really speak for themselves.

Clockwise from the top left: the "New York" conference room (modeled after an actual Airbnb listing), the ever-growing AirFamily tree, the most colorful and healthy lunches (every day!), the unofficial office sport, fresh flowers from my super sweet boss, and morning mimosas in celebration of the London launch party.

And did I mention my coworkers? Wit and kindness at a whole new level. My team especially.

feeding the pidgeons

When I left Chit Chat a few weeks ago, I thought I recognized the man sitting on the bench and feeding the birds. I took out my phone, scrolled through my flickr photos, and discovered that the man in front of me was, in fact, the same man from this blog post in 2010.

It turns out that 85-year-old Fred has been coming to the Pacifica pier almost every day for the past 35 years. He used to drive but now he takes the bus from San Francisco and picks up old bread at the 7-11 nearby. I wrote a more detailed story about meeting him over at You, Me & Charlie but couldn't help but share his story here, too.
